UNCLE MORT'S TRIBUTE TO LUMINOS

(We see a set bare except for a comfortable chair, in which Uncle Mort is sitting.)

MORT: Hello, I'm Uncle Mort, your friendly Soul Guide. Normally, I host Uncle Mort's Resting Place, but this is a special occasion. All of us were shocked to learn that the God of Light, Luminos, has gone to oblivion, as have two other gods who have touched us all, Fury and Kudzu. How can we deal with our feelings after such dreadful news? Well, one thing we can do is hold fast to our memories of the departed. As long as we have these, they haven't entirely gone. As it happens, I was the last to interview Luminos shortly before he left us.
(The scene changes to the Underworld, outside the Bone Palace. Luminos and Uncle Mort are seated on a rock. Mr. Gobbo is hanging onto Uncle Mort. He's obviously too frightened to speak in the presence of such a powerful God, even one who is temporarily dead.)
LUMINOS: Nice place you have here. A little dark.
(The scene changes back to Uncle Mort in his chair.)
MORT: We'll be showing the rest of that interview later on. But first, let's take a look at how the absence of Luminos is affecting us all. Many are having trouble accepting what has happened, and cling to a belief that Luminos will return, as he has done at least twice before. This notion seems to have powerful support.
(The scene changes to a realm of flames, in the midst of which we see Yultan Earthforge.)
YULTAN: Luminos will be back.
(Back to Uncle Mort.)
MORT: Yet, even with that prophecy from the Eldest God we must consider that what Luminos experienced before was merely death. This time, he has been obliterated, and we have no conception of how any being can return from that. How did such an unbelievable thing happen? Let's look at this reconstruction.
(The scene fades and is replaced with a crudely animated scene, on the moon. A cartoon Yultan strikes the surface with a hammer and a sheath. Little white line segments begin to flow from these objects to a cartoon Luminos, who starts to glow. More white lines flow to Luminos from cartoon versions of Kudzu and Havoc and a heart-shaped object that Havoc carries. There is a terrible explosion and flames are everywhere. Yultan and Havoc are thrown out of the scene, and Havoc in particular looks much damaged. Luminos and Kudzu have vanished entirely, leaving only the burning moon. The scene changes to Luminos and Uncle Mort in the Underworld.)
LUMINOS: Gods need to work together and make personal sacrifice.
(Back with Uncle Mort.)
MORT: Personal sacrifice. Yes, that excerpt from my exclusive final interview with Luminos truly explains how he could let this happen. And we'll be looking at the rest of that interview later on. But first, let's take a moment to appreciate what Luminos has done for us all. The God of Love himself, Byron, perhaps expressed it best.
(The Hall of Feasts.)
BYRON: I always thought that he was kinda a prude, What with his mamby pamby "I am sooo neutral and sooo honest." But in the end, he was neither, and that sort of deception I can respect. I love the guy, and know when I look at the strangely glowing moon, that it is little bits of Luminos shining down one us all, and that makes me feel just a bit better.
(Uncle Mort.)
MORT: It should make us all fell a bit better. And that's very important. We don't want to give in to negativity.
(The set of Uncle Mort's Resting Place. This is a clip from the "Spartans" episode. Fury is seated next to Uncle Mort.)
FURY: I must say, that after the incidents surrounding the creation of the world, we are doomed.
(Uncle Mort.)
MORT: Could that sort of thinking be what led Fury to wander off into oblivion? Perhaps we'll never know. But not all Gods are so negative.
(Another clip from an old Uncle Mort's Resting Place. Morkak is being interviewed.)
MORDAK: Let me assure you that it all comes out right in the end.
(Uncle Mort.)
MORT: I hope we can all keep that attitude. But enough of the impact of the tragedy on others. What of Luminos himself? We'll gain some insights later on when we view my exclusive Final Interview, but first, let's listen to another opinion.
(We hear somewhat noisy, low-quality sound, as if it was recorded by some sort of eavesdropping device. However, the voice is unmistakeably Gale.)
VOICE: Luminos is dead, and y'know what? I'm glad. He let Fury get away, when we had everything set up, and it wasn't going to cost him any mana, in fact he was going to net positive mana. He was also dangerously obsessed with his hatred of the moon. Luminos also offended me with his "I'm smarter than everyone else: don't ask questions, just do what I say" that he gave to Stelos and Euclidites. I was offended when he used that logic on them. He seemed to respect my intelligence, but I was ready to get extra offended when he used that logic on me.
But let's give the god credit where credit is due. Luminos was trying to do something great, and he did it. He involved a lot of people. He got a lot of cooperation. He meant well. He handled his affairs much more honestly than almost anybody,. He came to me and got me to agree to his plan to ignite the moon, but he wasn't afraid to tell me that my interests might suffer from his plot. He tried to make it so that everyone would benefit from what he was doing. He put a lot of work into making the Great Council worth a damn, and if there had been a messenger or if his politics hadn't been so controversial, he would have gotten the chance to show us how well he'd done. He was a great god who did great things. When we find out the results of his plot to ignite the moon, I'm going to try to remember Luminos as the god who sacrificed himself to give us all of that.
MORT: Clearly, Luminos could evoke very complex reactions from other gods. I recall his explanation of how he ended up becoming an outlaw and then being sent to the Underworld by Fury.
(The Underworld.)
LUMINOS: I attacked him outside of a domain.
(Back with Uncle Mort.)
MORT: That sounds shocking, but it was actually part of a plan to enhance the combat readiness of the gods against the coming of the demons.
(The Underworld.)
LUMINOS: In fact, I suggested Fury's School.
MORT: An important endeavor, I'm sure. But I don't suppose there's much of a role there for pacifists like me.
LUMINOS: Unfortunately, no. You can't attack, so you're hard to train.
(Back with Uncle Mort.)
MORT: Yes, Luminos was a god who faced may worries and tried his best to do something about them. Sometimes, he felt he was he was almost alone in his efforts. Shortly before my Final Interview with Luminos, a Great Council meeting had been aborted when a quorum failed to appear. I asked him how he felt about this.
(The Underworld.)
LUMINOS: Disappointed. Clearly, Earth is now more important to the gods than heaven. It's become their favorite plaything. Sometimes I think perhaps I shouldn't have made the Sun, but that's what the gods wanted, so that's what I gave them.
MORT: Am I detecting a trace of bitterness or self-doubt?
LUMINOS: Oh no. It's just that... Gods need to work together and make personal sacrifice. But they aren't, and so they aren't accomplishing anything.
MORT: That sounds like it bodes ill for the future.
LUMINOS: Yes. The only hope is for the gods to realize this.
(Back with Uncle Mort.)
MORT: However, for all his cares, there was one thing that brought special delight to Luminos. That was his favorite of mortal races, the Feranyi. His pride was obvious when we talked about them.
(The Underworld.)
LUMINOS: They are Celestial Spriits in flesh form. Even Mab and Kowabunga have Feranyi ancestry.
MORT: Do the Feranyi have a special mission in the cosmic scheme of things?
LUMINOS: Yes, they certainly do. That mission is to teach mortals the meaning of peace and harmony. For mortals are different. Dealing with demons may require violence, but that is a task reserved for the gods.
MORT: What message would you like to give to the souls of the dead Feranyi?
LUMINOS: Follow the light.
(Back with Uncle Mort)
MORT: Thank you, and good night.
(Uncle Mort fades away and is replaced with a still portrait of Luminos. Beneath it appears the inscription: "Follow the light.")
