Zeta Tucanae, G2 (9.7,0.7,-21.2)
Kalahari (terrestrial), gas giant
Among the first terrestrial planets discovered by telescope, Kalahari was the target of over a dozen expeditions in its first century, its lush tropical environment attracted many colonists. Living on this bountiful, beautiful, almost paradisiac world, the colonists formed scattered, low-tech communities. This lasted until 2286, when an Earth corporation known as Acme Adventure began building orbital facilities around Kalahari. In 2307, seeing the writing on the wall, the corporate executives of Acme Adventures and their families, 600 people and a modular processing/industrial plant, left Earth completely. Arriving on Kalahari fifty years later, they founded the city of New Berth and set themselves up as the planetary rulers. The next 500 years of history was dominated by the clash between the Corporates (as they came to be known) and the Outlanders, the original settlers. At times, the conflict has erupted into outright war, though it is more often characterized by small raids, skirmishes, and subtle diplomatic/economic maneuvers. After the last war, in 2800, the Corporates were driven back to New Berth and their orbital stations, though they clandestinely run a number of mining/harvesting operations in Outlander territory. The Outlanders are mostly a collection of villages and towns, combined in a fractious confederation without even a common language.
