On 23rd century Earth, Tyrell Corporation was an amazingly successful cybernetics/robotics/computer mega-corporation. Unfortunately, they hit their peak about the same time as a massive anti-robotics religious movement which was sweeping the world. Rather than lose their lives and fortunes to government-supported lynch mobs, the Tyrell executives built a generation ship and left Earth with 30,000 employees in 2266 for Tau Ceti, where a thriving colony was already in place on a partially terraformed world. Arriving in 2311, the Tyrell Corporation immediately took over, renaming the planet, and ruthlessly suppressing all resistance by nuking any city which protested their rule. In the centuries since they have mellowed somewhat, and Tyrell is ruled by a "corporate autocracy" which is only mildly repressive. In the interim, the Tyrellians went on to make great advances in AI and biological/machine interfacing. Today most Tyrellians see flesh as weak and at a young age replace as much of their bodies as possible with artificial parts which make no pretense at looking natural; 97% of the population has some form of artificial body part, and 19% are complete cyborgs, the only human part left being the brain. Even in the area of the brain, they often add in numerous cybernetic enhancements. They have also developed biochips, extremely powerful computing devices which make use of organic macro-molecules, used in most of their computers and cybernetic implants. These biochips rely on certain rare transition elements (niobium, scandium, vanadium, etc) which are in short supply in the system. Tyrell's industry is almost completely automated and cheaply and efficiently churns out vast quantities of goods. Despite (or perhaps because of) all these advances, modern Tyrellian society has become somewhat decadent and stagnant, and has come up with few breakthroughs in the last century. |
